The Difference In Power
2.5 - 3.5kw Split System
Best for bedrooms, studies, and single rooms up to around 20–35m². These units are quiet, energy efficient, and cheap to run typically costing around $0.10–0.25 per hour at full load. A 2.5kW suits a small bedroom or home office. Step up to 3.5kW if the room gets a lot of afternoon sun, has high ceilings, or is poorly insulated.
5 - 7kw Split System
The sweet spot for most Melbourne living rooms, open plan kitchen and dining areas, and larger bedrooms up to around 35–65m². A 5kW handles a typical lounge room comfortably. Move to a 6–7kW if the space is open-plan, north or west facing, has a lot of glass, or connects to an adjoining area that also needs cooling.

For large open plan living areas, whole floor open layouts, commercial spaces, or anywhere over 65m² that needs to be cooled by a single unit.
